The Institute of Mathematics mourns the passing of Dr. Ma. Lailani “Lani” B. Walo, a cherished alumna and former faculty member who dedicated 23 years of service to the University.

Lani earned her BS Mathematics degree from UP Diliman in 1991. After serving for three years as an Instructor at UP Manila, she returned to UP Diliman in 1995. She went on to earn her MS and PhD in Mathematics degrees in 2003 and 2008, respectively, working on symmetry and color symmetry groups under the mentorship of Professor Rene Felix.

Throughout her years at the Institute, Lani served in various capacities, including Assistant to the Chairman for Administration, GE Coordinator, and Program Adviser for the M.A. Mathematics program. She taught undergraduate and graduate courses in abstract algebra and modern geometry, as well as GE mathematics courses.

The Institute is deeply grateful for Lani’s many contributions and will remember her as a warm and thoughtful colleague and collaborator, generous in sharing her time and talents with those around her. Her students will remember her for the care and compassion she brought to her teaching.
