Invitation to Work on Homogenization
The Differential Equations (DE) research group of IMath invites graduate (MS or PhD) students to work on a topic on homogenization.
Homogenization is the study of the macroscopic behavior of microscopically heterogeneous composite materials. Composite materials are materials that are composed of two or more components, such as concrete (a periodic material), plywood (a layered material), and sponge (a porous medium). Some behaviors of these materials (e.g. thermal conduction) can be modelled by partial differential equations (PDEs).
One type of homogenization is called periodic homogenization, where the focus is on composite materials that have finely mixed components. In such materials, a reasonable assumption is that the distribution of the heterogeneities is periodic. This is the topic of interest for this research.
Students who have taken a differential equations course and/or functional analysis course are preferred (but not required). For more inquiries, please email Dr. Jose Ernie Lope at jclope@up.edu.ph.
