REMEDIOS DAVID SANTOS (1938 – 2026)
The Institute of Mathematics deeply mourns the passing of retired Professor Remedios David Santos, who died on 07 January 2026. Professor Santos joined UP Diliman as an Instructor in 1960, immediately after obtaining her BS Mathematics degree from the University. She completed her master’s degree in 1976, supported by a Local Faculty Fellowship. She rose steadily through the academic ranks, becoming an Associate Professor in 1981 and a Full Professor in 1995. After 43 years of dedicated service, she formally retired, yet continued to serve the Institute as a Professorial Lecturer for five more academic years.
Fondly remembered by her former students as elegant and firm, yet compassionate, Professor Medy taught differential equations, real analysis, solid geometry, and abstract algebra at the undergraduate level, as well as analysis and algebra courses in the MA Mathematics program. She played a key role in the institution and implementation of the revised calculus series for mathematics majors and contributed actively to the development of the course texts. In recognition of her excellence in teaching, she was awarded the C.P. Romulo Professorial Chair in Teaching in 1995.
Professor Medy and her husband, the late Professor Ernesto “Ernie” Santos, were beloved teachers to generations of mathematics students. Together, they shaped countless lives through their dedication to mathematical education and their genuine care for their students. We remember Professor Medy with deep affection, and we take comfort in the thought that she is now reunited with her beloved husband.
Beyond the classroom, Professor Santos served the University in various capacities. She was a member of the College of Arts and Sciences Scholarship Committee and the Departmental Examinations Committee, taught at the UP Extension Program in Manila, and served as a Board Member of the UP PAUW Child Study Center.
In honor of the exemplary careers of Professors Medy and Ernie Santos in the Institute of Mathematics, the UP Diliman Mathematics Foundation Inc., through the generous donation of a benefactor, established the Professors Ernesto Santos and Remedios David Santos Meritorious Service Award, conferred on outstanding faculty members.
Professor Santos will be deeply missed. Her contagious enthusiasm, warmth, and devotion to teaching will always be cherished and remembered.
