(Laureates of mathematics and computer science meet the next generation)
Dr. Gervy Marie Angeles, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Mathematics, University of the Philippines Diliman, was among a select group of young researchers invited to attend the 12th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF).
The HLF is an annual networking conference held in Heidelberg, Germany, where 200 carefully chosen young researchers from across the globe spend a week engaging with laureates of the most prestigious prizes in mathematics and computer science: the Abel Prize, ACM A.M. Turing Award, ACM Prize in Computing, Fields Medal, IMU Abacus Medal, and Nevanlinna Prize.
Dr. Angeles was the only Filipino participant in this year’s forum, held from September 14-19, 2025, and joined peers from over 60 countries in lectures, master classes, and small-group discussions led by laureates and experts. These sessions covered cutting-edge research and pressing global issues at the intersection of mathematics, computer science, and society. The week also included poster sessions, panel discussions, and collaborative exchanges designed to foster both intellectual engagement and long-term connections within the international research community.
Beyond the academic program, participants experienced the cultural and historic richness of Heidelberg. Highlights included visits to the city’s landmarks, a boat trip along the Neckar River, and evenings celebrating intercultural exchange, where young researchers proudly represented their home countries.
The Heidelberg Laureate Forum is regarded as a unique platform where early-career researchers gain direct access to the wisdom of laureates while also building global networks. For Dr. Angeles, the opportunity to represent the Philippines on such an international stage not only provided valuable insights for research and academic growth but also underscored the importance of showcasing Filipino excellence in mathematics on the world stage.
