Benchmarking at Thammasat University and Mahidol University
From October 31 to November 2, 2024, the Modeling and Applications Group from the Institute of Mathematics, University of the Philippines Diliman, conducted a benchmarking activity in Bangkok, Thailand. The group visited the Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT) at Thammasat University and the Faculty of Tropical Medicine at Mahidol University. The delegation included Professor Carlene P. C. Pilar-Arceo, Associate Professor Aurelio A. de los Reyes V, Associate Professor Victoria May P. Mendoza, and Assistant Professor Bryan S. Hernandez.
The primary objective of the activity was to strengthen international collaborations by fostering partnerships in research, academic exchanges, and student development. At Thammasat University, discussions focused on integrating mathematical techniques into chemical engineering, exploring innovative approaches to interdisciplinary applications. Meanwhile, the visit to Mahidol University emphasized the critical role of mathematical modeling in public health, particularly in epidemiology and infectious diseases. To formalize these initiatives, potential Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were discussed, paving the way for streamlined joint research projects and faculty exchanges. This benchmarking activity represents a significant step toward advancing research excellence and academic collaboration in Southeast Asia, strengthening ties between the Philippines and Thailand in the mathematical sciences.
