Elmie Peralta Verzosa (1933-2024)

The Institute of Mathematics mourns the passing of beloved Professor Elmie Peralta Verzosa. She was 90 years old.

Hailing from Sto. Domingo, Ilocos Sur, Professor Verzosa obtained her BS Mathematics degree from UP Diliman in 1955, an outstanding class that included the late Professors Flor Cejalvo and Rica Panganiban. The three lifelong friends and bridge partners went on to have distinguished careers in the University until retirement. Professor Verzosa also completed the MAT Mathematics degree in 1964 from UP Diliman and then obtained a UP Partial Fellowship to pursue her MA Mathematics degree from the University of Detroit from 1965 to 1967.

She was the College Secretary of the College of Science for seven years from the mid-80s, and was Assistant to the Registrar for Registration from 1992 to 1993. She has written textbooks and seminar papers on modern mathematics for college freshmen, elementary set theory, and p-adic numbers. She was a member of the Michigan Beta Chapter of the Pi Mu Epsilon Fraternity (National Mathematics Honor onorHoFraternity). A founding member of the Mathematical Society of the Philippines (MSP), she was a participant of the very first MSP National Congress of Mathematics.

She is survived by Willie, her loving husband of 57 years, and daughters Adel and Mel and their families.
