Romulo Goloyugo Pizaña, 07 February 1948 – 13 March 2024

The Institute of Mathematics mourns the passing of Professor Romulo Goloyugo Pizaña last March 13. He was 76.

Professor Pizaña obtained his BS Mathematics degree in 1971, his MS Mathematics (Operations Research) degree in 1981, and his PhD Mathematics degree in 1992, all from UP Diliman. He was an undergraduate scholar of the National Science Development Board, the precursor of DOST, and a doctoral fellow of the UP-Ateneo-DLSU Consortium. Since obtaining his PhD degree, he had short visits to Japan as a fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and to Australia as a recipient of the Australian International Development Educational Program Study Grant.

He did research on intersection graphs, triangle graphs and graph foldings, and presented his research results in conferences here and abroad. He was also engaged in extension work, giving lectures in high schools in Metro Manila, Eastern Samar, and Pampanga.

He held various positions in the Institute of Mathematics and the College of Science: as Assistant to the Chairman for Administration, as Assistant College Secretary, and as Coordinator of the Science and Society Program.

Professor Pizaña is also remembered for his passion for music and music ministry. He was a member of the UP Madrigal Singers and served as director and conductor the His Sounds and other choral groups.
