IWOMB 2024 and Philippine Society for Mathematical Biology (PSMB)

The 2024 International Workshop on Mathematical Biology (IWOMB 2024) held in Boracay island from January 22-25, 2024 has been successfully concluded. About 60 young and budding researchers from different universities nationwide participated in the said event. Both foreign and local experts highlighted the critical role of mathematical modeling in understanding and predicting complex biological systems, emphasizing the need for resilience and sustainability in the face of evolving challenges.

Since its inception in 2017, IWOMB has consistently aimed to not only organize workshops that bring together international and local experts; but also establish an organization dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary research in mathematical and biological sciences. This ambitious vision came to fruition with the launch of the Philippine Society for Mathematical Biology (PSMB) during IWOMB 2024. In a significant stride towards advancing the field of mathematical biology in the Philippines, the PSMB elected a distinguished inaugural set of board members, marking a pivotal moment for the society:

  • Founding President: Aurelio A. de los Reyes, V (UP Diliman)
  • Vice President: Angelyn R. Lao (De La Salle University)
  • Secretary: Victoria May P. Mendoza (UP Diliman)
  • Treasurer: Editha C. Jose (UP Los Baños)
  • Public Relations and Communications Committee: Jomar F. Rabajante (UP Los Baños) and May Anne E. Mata (UP Mindanao)
  • Membership Committee: Bryan S. Hernandez (UP Diliman), Mark Jayson V. Cortez (UP Los Baños), Racquel Tabornal Bandong (UP Cebu)
