IMath graduates at the 10th Heidelberg Laureate Forum

Two IMath graduates were among a select group of excellent researchers invited to attend the 10th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF). The HLF is an annual networking conference held in Heidelberg, Germany where 200 carefully selected researchers from all over the world spend a week interacting with laureates of distinguished prizes in mathematics and computer science: the Abel Prize, ACM A.M. Turing Award, ACM Prize in Computing, Fields Medal, IMU Abacus Medal, and Nevanlinna Prize.

IMath graduates Paul Reine Kennett Dela Rosa (Assistant Professor at UP Diliman) and Neil Kristofer Dizon (Postdoctoral researcher at University of Helsinki) spent the week of September 24-29, 2023 engaging in various activities organized for the HLF. Dela Rosa and Dizon were the only Filipinos among the selected participants from over 60 nations. Both Dela Rosa and Dizon were BS Mathematics graduates of the Institute of Mathematics, UP Diliman. Dela Rosa was an MS Mathematics graduate of IMath and obtained his PhD from Drexel University in Philadelphia, USA. Dizon was an MS Applied Mathematics graduate of IMath and obtained his PhD from the University of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia.

Dela Rosa, Dizon, and the other young researchers got to experience talks, master classes, and workshops by laureates and experts on their chosen special topics; panel discussions on different issues like those at the heart of mathematics and computer science with strong societal implications; and visits to local institutions. Throughout the entire week of the HLF, several opportunities were given to the young researchers to take part in stimulating discussions with the laureates and researchers from mathematics and computer science.

The HLF was not all about work though. The young researchers got to join a quick tour of the picturesque city of Heidelberg and a boat trip along the Neckar River. And for one special night during the conference, the researchers were asked to don their traditional attire for an evening celebrating the cultures that gathered for the HLF.
