UP World Expert Lecture Series: Joseph D. Lakey, Ph.D. and Jeffrey A. Hogan, Ph.D.
You are all invited to attend the UP World Expert Lecture Series hosted by the Institute of Mathematics on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, 10:00 – 11:30 AM. This is an in-person event and it will be held at the Conference Room.
The speakers:
Joseph D. Lakey, Ph.D. (New Mexico State University, USA)
Title: Space limiting, bandlimiting, and estimation on hypercubes
Abstract: The Bell Labs theory of time and band limiting was developed by Landau, Slepian, Pollak and others in the 1960s to formalize physical observations about the amount of information that could be transmitted over a bandlimited channel in a given amount of time. This talk will review that theory briefly then consider its extension to other settings, specifically certain types of graphs. We will present a parallel theory in the case of hypercube graphs (Boolean cubes) and outline its potential application to analogues of stationary processes on such graphs.
Jeffrey A. Hogan, Ph.D. (University of Newcastle, Australia)
Title: A Walk Through Clifford Analysis
Abstract: In this talk we’ll take a wander through the foothills of Clifford analysis, which we view as an attempt to do for high dimensions that which complex analysis does for one dimension. We’ll see the Dirac operator, analogues of the Cauchy integral theorem and connections to mathematical physics. We’ll also see applications to the development of tools (such as wavelets, splines and prolates) for the analysis and processing of multidimensional, multichannel signals such as colour images.
