Abstract: Baybayin, a pre-Hispanic writing system in the Philippines, was declared the National Writing System of the Philippines in 2018, representing Philippine traditions and national identity. As such, it is promoted through its use in labels of processed locally produced food products, in signages for street names and public facilities, and in reading materials such as books, newspapers, and magazines. In this study, an algorithm that transliterates Baybayin scripts into Latin is proposed. The algorithm utilizes Support Vector Machine Classifier to discriminate Baybayin characters from images, then concatenates the equivalent Latin syllables to form the transliterated word. Empirical results show high classification performance of the proposed algorithm.
