Flor Cejalvo

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Professor Flor Cejalvo.

Professor Flor V. Cejalvo joined the Department of Mathematics as Instructor in 1955 and served as regular faculty member until retirement at age 65 as Professor 11 in 1998. She continued serving the University as Professorial Lecturer for five more years. She earned BS Mathematics (UP Diliman, 1955) and MS Mathematics (Stanford University, 1964) degrees and was a stalwart in the faculty, handling general education, service, majors and graduate courses, particularly in abstract algebra and modern geometry. She was part of the pioneering research group on crystallographic groups headed by Rene Felix in 1982 and co-authored several publications in Matimyas Matematika, NRCP Research Bulletin, and UP Natural and Applied Science Bulletin. With other faculty members, Professor Cejalvo also wrote several popular and widely used textbooks on College Algebra, College Algebra and Trigonometry, and Introduction to Calculus. An avid bridge player, she competed here and abroad, and occasionally handled Physical Education classes on Bridge in UP. We will miss her pinakbet and Facebook posts as we recall her tough and demanding courses. Above all, we are grateful for her distinguished service of almost five decades to the Institute and the University.

The Institute of Mathematics extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Professor Cejalvo and asks everyone for their prayers for the peaceful and eternal repose of her soul.
