About

The Workshop on Approximation and Optimization is an event organized by the Optimization and Approximation (OA) Research Group of the Institute of Mathematics. The workshop will be held on August 9 and 10, 2019 at the Institute of Mathematics, UP Diliman. The goals of the workshop are as follows:

  • To enhance the aptitude of participants, both faculty and graduate students, in optimization and approximation;
  • To raise awareness and cultivate interest in research in these fields;
  • To present current trends in these fields, specifically in convex analysis, frame theory, optimal control, and machine learning in data science; and
  • To promote research collaborations in these areas.

The workshop is funded by the University of the Philippines Diliman through the Office of the Chancellor. It is also supported by the Institute of Mathematics, College of Science, University of the Philippines Diliman.

Four invited speakers will keynote the workshop. These speakers are:

  • Gino Angelo Velasco, Dr. rer. nat (UPD), An Introduction to Frame Theory and Applications
  • Ariel Babierra, PhD  (UPLB), Generalized Inverse by Convex Analytical Methods
  • Rachelle Rivero, PhD (UPD), An Introduction to Support Vector Machines and Applications
  • Gilbert Peralta, Dr. rer. nat (UPB), Analysis and Numerics for Optimal Controls of PDEs with Delay

Registration is free but only selected applicants will be accepted. Participants are responsible for their travel and accommodation expenses.
